On July 17, 1955 Disneyland opened its gates. Built on a 160-acre orange grove, the 5 lands (Main Street, Adventureland, Frontierland, and Fantasyland, and Tomorrowland) were a monstrous undertaking. Opening day was a disaster with 22,000 counterfit tickets being made and distributed (the plan was for just 6,000 invitation only guests). The asphalt was soft from the heat so high heels sunk in. A plumbers strike left water fountains without function, a gas leak temporarily forced a few areas to close, and the live broadcast was nearly a debacle.
Of course, the rest is history.
"To all who come to this happy place: welcome. Disneyland is your land. Here age relives fond memories of the past...and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams and the hard facts which have created America ... with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world."
